The best part of this Cherry-Almond Crisp recipe from Joanna Gaines Magnolia Table Cookbook is that it brings back a whole flood of childhood memories and emotions. It's like a warm hug on a rainy day, or like sitting over a campfire waiting for something great to come out of the dutch oven.
It's delicious and the plus is that it could be something that you can prep for a camping trip and impress the family. You can make the topping ahead of time and season your cherries and freeze them, then bake at camp!
The TIPS...
The one tip that I can share with you on this one is, I used frozen cherries and I think that the amount of cornstarch was a little bit too much for them. The crisp turned out a little bit gummy, it was still great, but I think if I lighten that up the next time I make it, it will be even better.
I just think that it could have been just a little bit wetter in the end. I say this because when it cooled it was like a gummy paste and I think this was just because the frozen cherries just didn't have as much moisture as fresh would have.
The reaction...
My family love, LOVED this! My parents are big-time cherry pie lovers and I am not so much. But I feel like this one really bridged that gap and gave a really good contrast and compromise. This will probably become a family dinner night staple. They have already asked for it again.
Whether you choose to take this camping or just enjoy it for dinner this week, I hope you enjoy it as much as my family and I did.
Until next time, happy cooking!
